When visiting Sin City, why take a gamble on your accommodations? Double down with the eight best casino hotels in Las Vegas.

I’m standing outside The Bellagio watching more than 1,000 fountains gracefully dance in choreographed unison, waving along with the sounds of classical music as they shoot up 460 feet against the Las Vegas skyline. Suddenly, I get it. Sure, Vegas has seen its fair share of criticisms – it’s crowded, it’s crass, it plays to our lowest common denominator. But even the most jaded of visitors to the tourist-packed Sin City street would find it hard to deny the presence of sheer magic in the air.

As the self-described “Entertainment Capital of the World,” one of Earth’s most-visited tourism destinations attracts crowds for an infinite number of reasons, from buttoned-up business conventions to booze-fueled bachelor parties. But no matter what brings you here or which Cirque du Soleil show you are waiting on to start, everyone at some point sits down to place a bet. When gambling is a top priority on your trip, here are eight of the best casino resorts to book in Las Vegas.

Join the Daily Poker Tournaments at The Mirage

One of the first mega hotels on the Vegas street isn’t here to blow you away with over-the-top gimmicks or superfluous glamour. The 3,044-room AAA Four Diamond resort has been one of the top hotels on Vegas since it was built by Steve Wynn in 1989, with a classy old-school Vegas vibe that remains lively without being overly annoying.

Famous for long hosting one of the top poker rooms in Vegas, The Mirage‘s 100,000 square feet of gaming space includes a massive sports book, equipped with 85-foot HD projection screens, and themed slots such as Iron Man and Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. After wandering the casino floor to get a lay of the land, saddle up to the 25-table poker room and try your hand at seven-card stud or join in on the daily No Limit Texas Hold’Em tournaments.

Lodgings range from tastefully decorated standard rooms to absurd three-bedroom villas with 24-hour personal chefs and butler service. Check out the nightly volcano eruption shows outside the casino, before heading over to Tom Colicchio’s Heritage Steak for dinner and capping the night with a performance of The Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil. If you’re feeling adventurous, wander over to the adults-only Bare Pool Lounge for some “European-style sunbathing” and live DJs.

Sip Scotch at the High Roller Table at The Bellagio

Inspired by the gorgeous Italian lakefront town of Bellagio and memorialized in the 2001 heist film Oceans Eleven, The Bellagio has long been synonymous with luxury in Las Vegas. However, it’s not just the world-famous fountains, the on-site art gallery or the hotel’s lush botanical gardens that make this hotel one of the top choices in Las Vegas.

The Bellagio’s sprawling 116,000 square feet of gaming space (roughly the size of two football fields) hosts one of the best gaming floors in Vegas, its sexy 40-table poker room a haven for pro players and World Poker Tour showdowns. You can also sip rare vintage Scotch while rolling the dice in the opulent Art Deco Club Prime high limit lounge, or pick out a winner amidst the hotel’s 2,300 slot machines.

Rooms are noted for their beauty and elegance, with accommodations ranging from simple yet luxurious hotel rooms to ultra-ritzy invite-only villas. When you’re done dominating the craps table like Danny Ocean, toast your winning with a fancy French feast at a table overlooking the fountains at the AAA Five Diamond Le Cirque. The next day, kick back at the Mediterranean-styled The Pool at the Bellagio Hotel for a more laid-back take on the typical Vegas pool party rager.

Escape into Nature at Red Rock Casino Resort

Perched near the base of Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, about 10 minutes west of the street, the 5-star Red Rock Casino Resort is the most criminally overlooked of all Las Vegas casino hotels. Take a break from the endless noise of the street and get back to nature, overlooking stunning sandstone canyons and picturesque red-hued mountains from the comfort of your room.

Gamblers will find a more intimate environment for planning a date with lady luck. Instead of getting lost in a maze of massive gaming floors, Red Rock offers a more manageable layout of 20 poker tables and 16 blackjack tables, along with baccarat, craps, roulette, bingo and a chic VIP high limit table games lounge. With 2,700 slot machines and a 200-TV-strong sports book, the resort is also known by locals as one of the best hotels for slots and video poker in Vegas.

Accommodations include chic, modern hotel rooms and opulent Grand Villa Suites. Play some poolside blackjack at the Sandbar Pool, see some live music at the on-site Rocks Lounge, or carve into some USDA Prime steak at T-Bones Chophouse. There’s even a 72-lane bowling alley with “cosmic” bowling on weekends for those who want a little fun without having to suffer through another cookie-cutter, eardrum-bursting Vegas nightclub experience.

Play Blackjack by The Pool at Encore at Wynn

Together with the adjacent Wynn Las Vegas, Encore at Wynn is one of the largest and most opulent hotels in Vegas. Located on a quieter stretch of the street(north of most Vegas mega resorts) with all guests at the newer 2,034-room Encore given access to the full suite of amenities at the main 2,716-room Wynn, the combined resort claims the most five-star awards of any independent hotel in the world.

With an almost incomprehensible 263,000 square feet of gaming space between the two hotels, Encore’s gaming floor is a bit more laid-back and is home to the Wynn’s legendarily posh 28-table poker room. The hotel also boasts one of the widest varieties of table games and slots, in addition to a high limit gaming pavilion at its always-happening Encore Beach Club pool.

Rooms and suites are among the biggest on the street, unfurling excellent views of the skyline and mountains from as high as 48 stories. While the resort also includes its own shopping complex and 18-hole championship golf course, Encore’s most well known attraction is its massive 40,000-square foot XS Nightclub. Regarded as one of the world’s top clubs, it features a 10-foot rotating chandelier amidst an otherworldly assemblage of 10,000 lights set to pounding EDM music.

TL;DR

During the Pixel 9 series launch, Google referred to the Pixel Feature Drops as Pixel Drops.
The Pixel 9 series will receive seven years of Pixel Drops, including OS and security updates.
Unlike previous years, the Pixel 9 series will ship with Android 14 instead of the latest Android 15.

The 2024 Pixel launch event has come and gone, leaving a trail of new devices and announcements in its wake. Among the redesigned Pixel 9 series, new Pixel smartwatches, and Pixel earbuds, a subtle yet noteworthy change slipped through: the renaming of Pixel Feature Drops to simply “Pixel Drops.”

For those new to the term, Pixel Drops — formerly known as Pixel Feature Drops — are a cornerstone of the Pixel ecosystem. These are frequent software updates that enhance the functionality of Pixel phones, watches, and earbuds. They can sometimes introduce new features and, at other times, optimize existing functionalities to improve the Pixel experience.

The rebranding of Pixel Feature Drops to Pixel Drops may seem like a small change, but it could signal potential shifts in how these updates are managed or delivered. Historically, these drops have arrived around once every three months, with the last one arriving in June 2024.

However, Google did reaffirm its commitment to long-term software support for the Pixel 9 series, promising a full seven years of Pixel Drops. The seven years of software support also covers Android OS upgrades and system security updates.

However, there’s a twist this year: the Pixel 9 series ships with Android 14 out of the box rather than debuting the newest version of Android, as has been the tradition so far. This decision adds some intrigue to Google’s “seven years” of OS upgrade promise. Will the seven-year promise extend only to Android 21, or could it potentially cover Android 22, considering the Pixel 9 series will receive Android 15 this year itself?

Google has announced a Research with Gemini feature at its Made By Google event.
Gemini is able to research your desired topic, with the chatbot then spitting out a research report.

Researching a topic can be a time-intensive endeavor, but what if you could get AI to do most of it instead? That’s exactly what Google has announced for Gemini.

Google announced Research with Gemini at its Made By Google event today (August 13) alongside the Pixel 9 series, and it promises to take most of the legwork out of conducting research online.

Research with Gemini screenshot 1Research with Gemini screenshot

Google senior vice-president Rick Osterloh gave the example of asking Gemini to research “grad school scholarship programs for undergrads interested in public service.” He also asked Gemini to research what he needed to do to open a sidewalk cafe in Seattle.

Gemini will subsequently create a research plan. From here, it “curates” pages from across the web, including “sub-pages and dropdown menus.”

“It then synthesizes all that information into a well-organized research report in a Google doc,” Osterloh explained, complete with links to source pages. He added that in the case of the sidewalk cafe query, Gemini looked into the relevant permits and outdoor seating too.

Would you use Research with Gemini?

This all sounds fairly in-depth for an AI service, but we’re keen to see how deep this actually is compared to conventional AI assistants like the standard Gemini or ChatGPT. Otherwise, the only real benefit might be that you’re looking at a well-presented Google document.

Google added that Research with Gemini will be available to Gemini Advanced subscribers in the “coming months.” The company’s text disclaimer adds that it will be available on select devices and in select languages. Your guess is as good as ours.

]]>

China is currently busy accumulating most of the gold medals in the table tennis events in the Paris Olympics. Meanwhile, an AI-powered robot from Google DeepMind has achieved “amateur human level performance” in the sport.

In a study published in an Arxiv paper this week, the Google artificial intelligence subsidiary outlined how the robot functions, along with footage of it taking on what we can only assume were willing enthusiastic ping pong players of varying skill.

According to DeepMind, the racket-wielding robot had to be good at low-level skills, like returning the ball, as well as more complex tasks, like long-term planning and strategising. It also played against opponents with diverse styles, drawing on vast amounts of data to refine and adapt its approach.

Not Olympic level quite yet

The robotic arm — and its 3D-printed racket — won 13 out of 29 games against human opponents with different levels of skill in the game. It won 100% of matches against “beginner” and 55% against “intermediate” players. However, it lost every single time that it faced an “advanced” opponent.

DeepMind said the results of the recent project constitute a step towards the goal of achieving human-level speed and performance on real world tasks, a “north star” for the robotics community.

In order to achieve them, its researchers say they made use of four applications that could also make the findings useful beyond hitting a small ball over a tiny net, difficult though it may be:

A hierarchical and modular policy architecture
Techniques to enable zero-shot sim-to-real including an iterative approach to defining the training task distribution grounded in the real-world
Real-time adaptation to unseen opponents
A user-study to test the model playing actual matches against unseen humans in physical environments

The company further added that its approach had led to ”competitive play at human level and a robot agent that humans actually enjoy playing with.” Indeed, its non-robot competitors in the demonstration videos do seem to be enjoying themselves.

Table tennis robotics

Google DeepMind is not the only robotics company to choose table tennis to train their systems. The sport requires hand-eye coordination, strategic thinking, speed, and adaptability, among other things, making it well suited to train and test these skills in AI-powered robots.

The world’s “first robot table tennis tutor” was acknowledged by Guinness World Records in 2017. The rather imposing machine was developed by Japanese electronics company OMRON. Its latest iteration is the FORPHEUS (stands for “Future OMRON Robotics technology for Exploring Possibility of Harmonized aUtomation with Sinic theoretics,” and is also inspired by the ancient mythological figure Orpheus…).

OMRON says it “embodies the relationship that will exist between humans and technology in the future.”

Google DeepMind makes no such existential claims for its recent ping pong champion, but the findings from its development may still prove profound for our robot friends down the line. We do however feel that DeepMind’s robotic arm is severely lacking in the abbreviation department.

TL;DR

Thanks to Wear OS 5, the Pixel Watch 3 features a grid-based app launcher.
This long-awaited feature has not officially been available within the Wear OS experience in the past.

Google Pixel Watch 3 users can now access apps more efficiently than ever with a new grid-style view available within the device’s library of installed apps. In the past, users were limited to a list-style app drawer, which often meant excessive vertical scrolling. The grid view speeds up the process by showing more apps on screen at a time. The option is particularly attractive given the increased screen real estate of the newest lineup, especially on the new 45mm model.

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority

Notably, the original app list displayed both the icon and name of each installed app. With a grid view, the watch displays only the apps themselves, so users will need to have a good knowledge of which tools they have installed. Given that many smartwatch users keep a lean list of apps, this shouldn’t be a huge concern for most. If, however, you have a lengthy app list with selections you don’t often use, you may need to memorize a few icons before switching to grid mode.

Users can also always choose to retain the original format and stick with a list-style app drawer. Like on the Apple Watch, both organizational options are readily available. Either way, Pixel Watch 3 users have plenty of new updates to explore related to apps, including the brand-new Recorder app, offline capabilities within Google Maps, and more. The device is available for pre-order now and is scheduled to officially hit shelves on September 10.

]]>

In the business world (and beyond) everybody loves the success story of an underdog. Estonia’s Bolt is one such example.

The startup was founded in 2013 by then 19-year-old Markus Vilig with €5,000 in his pocket. Since then, it has successfully become the European challenger to Uber, valued at €7.4bn at its latest fundraising in 2022.

The company also claims to be Europe’s first mobility super-app, combining ride-hailing with services including car and scooter sharing as well as food and grocery delivery.

Bolt now operates in over 50 countries across its home continent, Africa, Asia, and Latin and North America.

But what lies behind the startup’s growth and expansion strategy, especially in the ride-hailing segment where it is particularly strong?

“When launching into a new market, the first thing to look into is what’s the size of this market and how much it can grow,” Luiz Fittipaldi, who led the company’s global strategy planning between June 2023 and July 2024, tells TNW.

Adequate supply of drivers and existing competition are also key factors impacting a market’s attractiveness.

A highly fragmented market doesn’t present a beneficial opportunity, according to Fittipaldi. That’s because the presence of multiple players reduces the potential market share as well as access to drivers who have various apps to choose from.

Instead, tapping into a monopolised market is significantly more favourable.

“When you have a single player operating in the market, they usually don’t provide the best service because there is no one challenging them.” This leaves room for competing services that aim for faster vehicle arrival times (ETA) and greater affordability.

Early-stage vs mature markets

When it comes to driving growth, Bolt’s strategy differs depending on the stage of each individual market.

For entrance into new, early-stage markets the company focuses on creating a good value proposition for drivers and competitive pricing for customers. It’s also about compensating an initially lower service quality — until there’s enough driver supply to ensure fast arrival times — with affordability, in order to attract riders.

“The network effect is how we build up,” Fittipaldi says. The idea is simple: more riders attract more drivers and more drivers improve the service for riders. In turn, higher service quality attracts more riders, which engages more drivers.

When it comes to more mature markets where Bolt is operating in, competitive pricing and ETA are also key targets for achieving growth.

But according to Fittipaldi, the company’s primary aim isn’t taking away a part from a rival’s market share. It’s expanding the market itself by bringing in new customers.

“In this case, even if we keep the same market share, we can grow by three to five times in about five years.”

One way to attract new customers is catering to different needs, such as pet-friendly vehicles or cars with child seats.

The biggest potential, however, lies in shifting consumer behaviour towards a transportation model that depends less on private cars.

The environmental benefit is only one part of the equation, Fittipaldi says. The other part is offering services that compete financially with car ownership, especially for consumers with limited car use.

This means providing transportation options — from ride-hailing to car rental for longer trips, and scooter sharing for short distances — that can be more affordable in the long term than the accumulated costs of car maintenance, insurance, and fueling.

Regulation

For companies like Bolt, regulation is a major factor impacting both the attractiveness of new markets and the potential growth in existing ones.

“It comes down to assessing whether existing regulation can enable the supply of drivers, and whether the investments needed to comply with regulatory requirements is worth it in the long run,” Fittipaldi says.

For the ride-hailing segment, one regulatory parameter is the type of licences needed for drivers — alongside the power of taxi associations and the legislation that protects them.

In the UK, for example, there are more favourable conditions. To sign up on the app, drivers can have either a taxi licence or private hire vehicle (PHV) licence — which allows individuals outside of the taxi profession to participate in the service.

The situation is different in Cyprus, where only taxi licence holders are eligible.

Similarly in Greece, where Bolt doesn’t operate, ride-hailing apps are only available to taxi drivers, following a series of protests from taxi unions causing Uber to suspend its UberX service, manned by private drivers.

Meanwhile, Bolt will also have to navigate upcoming rules on gig worker rights in its home markets.

The so-called EU platform workers directive addresses concerns about the misclassification of gig workers as independent contractors, which can deprive them of labour rights. It aims to provide those misclassified as self-employed with full-employment status and benefits — increasing demands and costs for platforms like Bolt.

The legislation is now pending approval by the European Council. Estonia has reportedly been among the EU countries opposing the change, calling for less comprehensive rules.

According to Fittipaldi, regulation is one of the biggest challenges Bolt is facing in the European market.

“But Europe is the region that is the closest to reshaping cities and claiming space from private cars to give it back to people,” he says.

TL;DR

Anker is launching a 65W charger with a slim design that fits between larger adapters on a power strip.
Unlike most slim chargers with prongs on the broad side, Anker’s new charger positions the prongs on the narrow side, optimizing it for tight spaces on power strips.
The charger is listed on Anker Japan’s website with a winter 2024 launch date and a price of ¥6,990 (around $47 USD). Its U.S. release is still uncertain.

If you’re like most people, you have at least a few power strips that have become overcrowded with bulky chargers. Such overcrowding can make it hard for you to access and use all the available outlets. This would be especially frustrating if you need more outlets to plug in other devices. Well, the good news is that Anker has come up with a pretty smart solution to this problem.

The company is launching a new 65W charger that has a slim enough frame to fit between larger adapters on a power strip (via The Verge). As the outlet reports, this sort of charger isn’t exactly novel in its design. However, most slim chargers we’ve seen so far have prongs on the broad side of the charger, which enables you to plug them into outlets behind furniture or other tight spaces. Anker, on the other hand, has taken a different approach by positioning the prongs toward the end of the narrow side.

This slim charger is currently listed on Anker Japan’s website, which states the product is slated for launch in the winter of 2024. It’s priced at ¥6,990, but the website doesn’t list any specific details about the charger, except that it will have two ports.

While we’re not sure if and when it will launch in the United States, we do have a sneak peek at its design thanks to a hands-on video shared by a Japanese outlet on X (formerly Twitter).

— onesuite | 映像×記事のWebメディア (@onesuite_jp) August 8, 2024
If the Japanese pricing is anything to go by, the charger should cost under $50, that is if it launches in the United States. Do you see yourself buying this compact charger? Let us know in the comments below.

]]>

Climate-focused venture capital funds have already raised $6.9bn since the beginning of 2024, up from $5.2bn for the entirety of 2023, according to a new report from Venture Capital Journal.

While climate VCs have closed less funds overall — 24 compared to 26 last year — the average pot size has swelled from $202mn to $267mn so far in 2024.

This climate tech cash boost is largely reflective of a new fund from billionaire Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV). The American climate tech funding vehicle recently closed its third fund at more than $839mn. BEV also closed a smaller, but still significant, $555m fund in January.

Bill Gates founded BEV in 2015 alongside some of the world’s richest people (men), including Jeff Bezos, Michael Bloomberg, and Richard Branson. The investment thesis was clear: back technologies that have the potential to decarbonise all facets of the world economy.

While the VC is based across the pond, it has made dozens of major investments in European startups. These include UK-based Mission Zero, which is developing modular carbon capture machines, and Sweden’s Heart Aerospace, which is building a hybrid-electric regional passenger plane.

While Bill Gates’ deep-pocketed firm is funneling big figures in Europe, a number of homegrown climate tech funds are raising substantial amounts of money as well.

This year, Sweden’s Norrsken raised $346mn and Berlin-based World Fund closed its first fund at $325mn. Spain’s Seaya Ventures also secured $325mn to invest in climate tech startups, becoming Southern Europe’s largest climate tech VC in the process.

The $6.9bn raised since the start of this year represents funds specifically set up to finance technologies designed to tackle climate change. Total private investment in climate tech, however, is much higher.

In 2023, VCs globally invested just over $50bn in climate tech startups, according to Dealroom data. This surpassed all other previous years apart from 2021 ($76bn), which saw record-high venture capital activity across industries. Promisingly, 2023 saw Europe surpass the US for climate tech VC funding.

While we’ll only get the full picture at the end of the year, heightened climate tech VC activity shows promising signs for the sector as a whole. As the globe pushes to decarbonise, climate tech has remained remarkably resilient despite an overall downturn in tech investment.

The Google Pixel 9 is now official, with pre-orders starting today. The new Google Pixel 9 series introduces more models than ever before, improved cameras, more RAM, and plenty of other improvements. Interested in the Pixel 9 but looking to save some cash on the deal? It’s possible to get a Google Pixel 9 for free or extremely cheap, though not without a few caveats.

How do I get a Google Pixel 9 for free?

No one is going to just hand you a Pixel 9 for free, aside from long-shot options like giveaways at least. If you really want a free phone, your only option is to pick it up through a carrier. That said, free is a loaded term here. Most deals require a trade-in, a new plan, a new line, or a similar set of terms and conditions. Regardless of how you receive your free phone, expect a contract period, typically 36 months in the US, though T-Mobile still offers phone payment plans for just two years.

You’ll be charged a monthly fee for the phone in nearly all cases, but you’ll instantly receive a credit each month that covers the cost. This is important because it means if you decide to cancel your carrier service, you’ll have to pay off the remaining balance on your ‘free’ phone first. If you wait out the full contract, you’ll own the Pixel 9 outright and can then cancel your service whenever you please.

Are these deals any good? If saving money is your sole concern, probably not. Often, you can fare better by pairing an unlocked Android phone with a prepaid phone carrier. You’ll have to tolerate issues like throttling during congestion, but this can lead to significant savings. Still, if you’re already with a major carrier, are eligible for a new phone, and don’t plan on switching carriers, this could be an excellent way to acquire a new phone without any upfront cost.

Verizon

New and existing Verizon customers can get the Pixel 9 for free with a trade-in, or you can save up to $800 on any other member of the Pixel 9 series. There’s also a free memory upgrade during the initial preorder period, which will upgrade your phone up to the next tier at no additional cost.

For those who have a Verizon Business account, you’ll also have the option of getting a Pixel 9 for free with a trade-in. This includes a free storage upgrade offer as well.

Interesting AT&T isn’t offering the Pixel 9 for free and will instead give it to customers for $10.99 a month, with no trade-ins or new plans required. The good news is while the base phone will cost you, you can get the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL for free with any eligible trade-in, despite the year or condition. Of course, if you really want the base Pixel 9 it’s likely you get it for free if you have a worthy trade-in as well.

T-Mobile

T-Mobile customers can get the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro for free with a trade-in, or by adding a line of Go5G Plus, Next, or a Go5G Business plan. While you won’t be able to get the Pixel 9 Pro XL or Pro Fold for free, you can get up to $1000 off with the same offer. This brings the Pro XL down to just $99, while the Fold becomes as affordable as the Pixel 9 typically retails for just $799.

Don’t have a trade-in to offer and don’t want to add a new line? T-Mobile is also offering $100 off the Pixel 9 Pro and $200 off the Pixel 9 Pro XL, no trade-ins or plan changes required.

Xfinity Mobile

Xfinity Mobile iPhone X

Xfinity Mobile is offering the Google Pixel 9 for free if you switch to Xfinity Mobile or Comcast Business Mobile. Already a customer? New and existing customers can get $500 off on any of the new Pixel family members, or up to $800 off with an eligible trade-in.

What if I don’t want the Pixel 9 series through a carrier deal?

What if you’re interested in the Pixel 9 but aren’t interested in going through a carrier to get it? In that case, you can still get it free through the Google Store, but only if you have an eligible device to trade in. Google is offering a free $100 store credit and up to $800 for a trade-in, so combining the two offers essentially gives you a free phone without all the carrier hassle.

Balderton Capital today announced the closing of its $1.3bn early stage and growth funds in a sign of the European tech sector regaining investor confidence and momentum.

We are often disconcerted at the lack of support for European entrepreneurship and innovation in comparison to that across the pond. However, there are investors who champion the region’s changemakers, such as Balderton, which invests exclusively in European startups and scaleups.

The new funds — the $615M Early Stage Fund IX and the $685M Growth Fund II — will back “Europe’s most ambitious entrepreneurs from seed stage through IPO,” the VC said in a statement.

Encouragingly for Europe’s tech industry, Balderton said it saw strong demand from global LPs, reflecting data showing that European funds outperformed its North American counterparts over 10- to 15-year periods.

Having backed over 275 tech companies across Europe since its inception in 2000, Balderton might know a thing or two about investment by now (as illustrated by initiatives such as the launch of its Founders Wellbeing and Performance Platform earlier this year). And where some VCs specialise in particular sectors, Balderton’s bets encompass a broad range of the tech ecosystem.

Sector diversification equals resilience

Balderton’s current portfolio includes the likes of neobank — and Europe’s most valuable startup — Revolut, mobile gaming company Dream Games, automated driving technology startup Wayve, and femtech app Clue. Startups like peer-to-peer shopping platform Depop, cybersecurity provider Darktrace, and AI chip developer Graphcore (recently acquired by SoftBank) count among previous investments.

“At Balderton, we believe the best way to change the world is to build a business — and that many of these world-changing businesses will be built in Europe,” said Bernard Liautaud, Managing Partner at Balderton. “As a firm, our mission is simple: to be the partner of choice to the founders starting and growing those European technology companies. These new funds put us in a position to do just that.”

Europe’s VC market, while smaller than that of the US, has proved resilient as a result of larger sector diversification, as exemplified by Balderton’s approach. It displayed an uptick in the second quarter of 2024, especially in AI and SaaS, while climate tech sectors such as energy have continued going relatively strongly despite the downturn of the past few years. However, the European market continues to face challenges when it comes to IPOs, with most exits occurring instead through acquisitions.
